Chinese names for other countries all tend to be ‘nice’ e.g. brave country, beautiful country, etc. But when Europeans first turned up they were said to come from Fu Lang (suppposedly derived from the word used throughout the Middle East for the Franks who were top dogs in Europe in Medieval times). Who made up the ‘modern’ names? Were the names chosen for diplomatic reasons? Are there other older names that are not so nice?
